• District Court, small claims division

  $7,000 or less

  Small claims bars attorneys and juries. A plaintiff over the cap may still use it but waives the excess.

• District Court, civil division

  up to $25,000 (EXCLUSIVE jurisdiction)

  Written answer. Because district court jurisdiction is exclusive at or below $25,000, essentially every consumer debt-buyer suit belongs here.

Can you e-file as a self-represented defendant?

MiFILE is rolling out court-by-court. Self-represented filers may e-file and usually are not required to — BUT a specific published list of courts DOES mandate e-filing for "all other filers," including several district courts. Check the official e-filing court list for yours.

Does filing an answer cost money?

No answer fee and no appearance fee exist in the district court fee table; filing fees are keyed to the size of the claim and charged to commence. A separate electronic-filing system fee applies where e-filing is used, and motion/jury-demand fees can reach a defendant.

Court holidays and closures

Michigan publishes a dated statewide court-holiday list (MCR 8.110(D)(2)(a)), but individual courts may adopt modifying orders — local lists can differ.

Your district court is identified by NUMBER and covers specific municipalities, so match your city to the court’s stated territory. E-FILING DEADLINE TRAP: a document e-filed on a weekend or court holiday is deemed filed the NEXT business day — do not e-file an answer on a Saturday deadline.
